What Material Swap Guide does
Pick a format and the guide lists greener alternatives — mono-material for recyclability, PLA/PBAT for compostability, rPET/rPE for recycled content — each with its certification scheme (CEFLEX, GRS, FSC, BPI), the practical trade-off, and the live cost premium or saving against the incumbent from PackIndex.
- Recyclable, compostable and recycled-content alternatives for 14 formats
- Certification named per option: CEFLEX, GRS, FSC, BPI, ASI
- Live cost delta from PackIndex — some swaps are cheaper, not just greener
- Honest trade-offs (barrier loss, compost-only, food-contact certification) stated up front
How it works
- Choose your current format
Select the pack you make today — flexible pouch, folding carton, PET bottle, mailer and more.
- Scan the alternatives
Each row is a greener material with its certification, the recyclability or compost route, and the trade-off.
- Read the live cost delta
The cost premium or saving is computed against live PackIndex prices, so the number reflects today's market.
- Take it to Optimize or Source
Carry a chosen swap into the Packaging Suite to re-cost the pack and RFQ it to suppliers.
Frequently asked
Are recyclable alternatives always more expensive?
No. Some swaps carry a premium (compostable films, high-PCR laminates), but others are cheaper — a plain kraft mailer or a lighter rPET can beat the incumbent. The guide shows the live cost delta either way.
What certifications does the guide reference?
The recognised schemes for each route: CEFLEX for recyclable flexibles, GRS for recycled content, FSC for responsible fibre, BPI for compostables, and ASI for lower-carbon aluminium.
Why show trade-offs instead of just the greenest option?
Because a swap that fails on barrier, needs industrial composting, or requires food-contact certification isn't a free win. Naming the trade-off lets you choose one that actually works for your product.
Is the Material Swap Guide free?
Yes — it's the free tier of the Sustainability tools. Downloadable reports and the deeper tools (EPR, CBAM, MRF) sit on paid plans.
